I started writing on Medium thinking it’d be fun to blog again. I hadn’t done it in a while unless you count the occasional unhinged Facebook rant. It was fine, but I couldn’t really develop longform word-vomiting into a real habit. The habit is what I was after. The more you write, the better your writing will be. That’s one of the tips on every “how to be successful as a writer” lists.
I’ve read too many of those lists on too many platforms. I commented on a follow-for-follow article which helped me build a small following of aspiring writers who mostly wrote about wanting to write. Before long, my feed was filled with whining about how “nobody really cares what I have to say.”
When one of these struck a chord, I’d look at the author’s work to wonder why. “It’s probably because they haven’t said anything else,” was my most frequent observation. I’ve felt that. I’ve also had days in which I post and don’t read. I don’t always clap when I read. Maybe…
